Den politiske høyresidens utmattende og grusomme krig mot «våkenhet» er nå på linje med forsøkene til noen muslimske amerikanere for å angripe L.G.B.T.Q. fellesskap under dekke av å beskytte religiøse friheter og foreldrerettigheter.
Etter å ha utholdt en gren av syndebukk etter 9/11, skulle du tro at vi muslimer ville ha lært.
Som en praktiserende muslimsk amerikaner som oppdrar tre barn, finner jeg det ikke i konflikt med min tro å erkjenne at i et pluralistisk, demokratisk samfunn må alle våre lokalsamfunn kunne leve med sikkerhet, verdighet og frihet, selv når det er dyptgående. forskjeller på visse spørsmål.
Forrige måned publiserte en gruppe muslimske lærde og predikanter en felles uttalelse med tittelen "Navigeringsforskjeller: klargjøring av seksuell og kjønnsetikk i islam." I navnet til å hjelpe familier gjentar uttalelsen det som av mange forskere anses å være tradisjonelle islamske syn på homofili, men bytter medfølelse, politisk framsyn og pastoral omsorg i favør av frykt, panikk og legalistisk dobbeltprat.
Den sier at "det er et økende press for å fremme L.G.B.T.Q.-sentriske verdier blant barn gjennom lover og forskrifter, og ignorerer foreldrenes samtykke og nekter både foreldre og barn muligheten til å uttrykke samvittighetsinnsigelser." Det ser ut til å ukritisk akseptere nullsumsforestillingen, fremdrevet av høyreorienterte politikere, at aksept av L.G.B.T.Q. fellesskapet går på bekostning av å gi opp religionsfriheten. Det virker uvitende om realiteten at hvis du erstattet «L.G.B.T.Q.-sentrisk» med «Shariah», ville det etterligne følelsene som ofte har vært rettet mot troende muslimer i landet vårt.

Men er det virkelig inkluderende og tolerant å signalisere til L.G.B.T.Q. barn eller L.G.B.T.Q. foreldre som bare leser en bok eller lærer om deres eksistens kan være så truende og støtende at det krever et fravalgsalternativ på skolene? Hvordan ville muslimske foreldre følt det hvis dette ble brukt på barnebøker om ramadan eller hajj?
Kareem Monib, en muslimsk forelder og grunnlegger av opt-out-gruppen Coalition of Virtue, nyligdukket opp på Fox Newsog knyttet til verten Laura Ingraham over det de så som deres kamp for religiøse friheter, og tilgir tilsynelatende Ingraham for hennes tidligere anti-muslimske bigotteri: «For fem år siden sa Laura at vi ikke skulle ha muslimer i dette landet.»Mr. Monib fortalte Semafor, "Nå sier hun: Takk Gud, muslimene er her!" Den økende politiske demoniseringen av L.G.B.T.Q. Amerikanerne følger det samme manuset som har blitt brukt til å marginalisere muslimer og tromme opp frykt for de antatte farene ved at sharia finner veien inn i det amerikanske rettssystemet, alt for å svelge til en valgkrets som er livredd for pluralisme.
La oss ta en DeLorean tilbake til årene etter 9/11, hvor islam, spesielt sharia-spekteret, ofte ble gjort til skurken.
På samme måte som de nylige bevisste forsøkene på å feilkarakterisere kritisk raseteori, ble Shariah bevisst feildefinert som en juridisk-politisk-militær doktrine ogvår tids fremste totalitære trussel.Takket være en velfinansiert høyremaskin, ble Shariah en lakmustest for muslimske amerikanske borgere for å bevise deres måtehold og lojalitet.
I 2011 sa presidentaspiranten Herman Cain at han ikke ville utnevne en muslim til sin potensielle administrasjon eller de føderale domstolene fordi han fryktet at de ville"tving sharia-loven deres på resten av oss."I 2015 gjentok Ben Carson disse samtalene og sa at han ikke ville støtte en muslimsk amerikaner som presidentmed mindre han eller hun ga avkall på sharia. Til slutt kjørte Donald Trump på et muslimsk forbud og innførte et endret reiseforbudmed hjelp fra Høyesterett. Representant Marjorie Taylor Greene sa nylig at transpersoner er "seksuelle rovdyr", og Texas G.O.P.s nye plattform avviser eksplisitt transidentitet og refererer tilhomofili som et «unormalt livsstilsvalg».I Florida forsvarte guvernør Ron DeSantis sin «Don't Say Gay»-lov ved å si at hans kritikere støtter «seksualisere barn i barnehagen.”
I mellomtiden sa Mr. Trump, som fortsatt er den republikanske frontløperen for 2024, at det å gi kjønnsbekreftende omsorg til mindreårige var lik "barnemishandling." Som et resultat av dette oppsvømte hatet er det over 520 anti-L.G.B.T.Q. lovforslag som har blitt innført i statlige lovgivere,i følgemenneskerettighetskampanjen.
Nå som skeive amerikanere blir trukket frem, hvorfor er noen muslimer så villige til å følge med?
Vi glemmer ofte at det er mennesker hvis liv er direkte påvirket av disse hatefulle ordene, uttalelsene og retningslinjene. Jeg tok kontakt med flere L.G.B.T.Q. Muslimer for å spørre dem om de hadde noen ord til medmuslimer som støtter høyrefløyens politiske angrep på L.G.B.T.Q. litteratur, rettigheter og identiteter. "Ikke la islamofober og evangeliske kristne som kjemper om politisk makt diktere konturene av din islam," skrev Ramish Nadeem og Hanan Jabril, unge muslimske aktivister, i en e-postmelding. "Kommer det virkelig til å skade barnas tro å lære om L.G.B.T.Q.+ mennesker, som eksisterer i verden vi lever i og til og med i våre muslimske tradisjoner? Er din islam virkelig så skjør at den må lede med ekskludering, isolasjon og hat i stedet for barmhjertighet, åpenhet og fellesskap?»
Som muslimer i Amerika har vi kapasitet til å være tro mot vår tro og å omfavne våre naboer – inkludert medlemmer av L.G.B.T.Q. samfunn som kanskje ikke deler all vår tro. Og som innbyggere som er klar over hvordan vi har blitt behandlet, bør vi ha bedre anerkjennelse av hvordan syndebukk av mennesker for deres seksuelle legning eller kjønnsidentitet er et skuespill fra en gammel splitt-og-hersk-lekebok. Som Times-spaltist Michelle Goldberg nyligskrev, "Ingenting driver konservative til å nå ut til grupper de en gang fryktet så mye som en annen gruppe som de frykter enda mer."
Som muslimsk forelder forstår jeg hvor vanskelig det er å oppdra barna våre i et politisk miljø som fortsatt ser på dem som evigvarende mistenkte på grunn av deres religion og i mange tilfeller deres hudfarge. Imidlertid har vi fortsatt religiøse friheter i dette landet som lar oss leve våre liv i henhold til våre verdier, selv om de ikke deles av flertallet.
Til syvende og sist krever det å leve i et pluralistisk samfunn gjensidighet og respekt, selv om vi av og til gjør hverandre ukomfortable. Det er hyklersk, kortsynt og grusomt for muslimer å innrette seg med hatefulle krefter som retter seg mot sårbare samfunn som, i likhet med oss, fortsatt kjemper mot bigotteri og for aksept. Veien videre er å velge et land der alle barna våre har en sjanse til å være heltene i sine egne historier.
